Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal BAH, explained

What Basic Allowance for Housing is, how it's figured for a Redstone Arsenal assignment, what changed for 2026, and how to check whether it covers rent in Huntsville, Madison or Athens. We link to the official calculator instead of printing rate tables, because DoD's tables are the only numbers that count.

Get your exact rate here: the official DoD BAH rate lookup run by the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO). Enter your duty-station ZIP code, the year and your pay grade.[1] If you don't know the ZIP, ask your gaining unit or the Redstone Housing Services Office.[2]

What BAH is

BAH is money for housing paid to service members stationed in the U.S. who aren't provided government quarters. It's an allowance, not pay, so it isn't taxed.[3] DTMO says BAH is based on housing costs in local civilian markets. It isn't meant to cover every housing cost.[4]

The three things that set your rate

  1. Pay grade. Rates rise with grade.[3]
  2. Duty location. BAH follows your permanent duty station ZIP code, not where you choose to live. If you're assigned to Redstone but rent in Athens or Decatur, you still get the rate for your duty station.[3]
  3. Dependency status. There's a "with dependents" rate and a "without dependents" rate. The number of dependents doesn't matter: one child or five gets the same rate.[4]

Behind those factors, DoD builds each area's rates from current rental market prices, average utility costs, and the type and size of home typical for each grade.[3]

What changed for 2026

DoD announced the 2026 rates in December 2025. They took effect January 1, 2026, with an average increase of 4.2% nationwide. BAH still includes a member cost-sharing amount of 5% of the national average housing cost for each grade, about $93 to $212 a month depending on grade and dependency status.[5] National averages tell you little about one area, so check the Huntsville figure in the calculator.[1]

Individual rate protection

If Huntsville's rate goes down next January, yours won't, as long as your status stays the same. DTMO pays whichever is larger: the newly published rate or what you got on December 31. Protection ends if you PCS, are reduced in grade, or change dependency status.[4]

Special cases

GI Bill housing allowance in Huntsville

Veterans and family members who use the Post-9/11 GI Bill get a monthly housing allowance (MHA) tied to BAH. For in-person classes, VA starts with the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at the ZIP code where you take most of your classes. It then prorates by your eligibility tier and rate of pursuit, which must be more than half time. For August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027, VA uses the 2026 BAH rates. Online-only students get a separate, lower flat amount, and students on active duty don't get MHA.[7]

So a UAH, Alabama A&M or Calhoun student's MHA depends on the campus ZIP. Look up E-5 with dependents for that ZIP in the DoD calculator.[1,7]

Does BAH cover rent in Huntsville?

Compare your rate with the federal rent benchmarks. HUD's Fair Market Rents estimate gross rent (rent plus basic utilities) for a typical unit in each metro.[8]

HUD Fiscal Year 2026 Fair Market Rents (monthly, including utilities). HUD sets FMRs at about the 40th percentile of gross rents for typical units.
AreaStudio1 BR2 BR3 BR4 BR
Huntsville metro (Madison & Limestone counties)$1,030$1,136$1,310$1,690$2,109
Decatur metro (Morgan & Lawrence counties)$755$776$961$1,262$1,550

Rent varies a lot by part of town and by commute. Use our neighborhoods guide for Census rent figures and drive times to Gate 9, and the cost-of-living comparison if you're coming from Colorado Springs.

Your school district usually matters as much as rent. Since BAH doesn't change with where you live, compare districts before you pick an area: see compare schools for each district's state report card, review-site pages and zone lookup.

Why no rate table? Third-party BAH sites copy DoD's numbers and sometimes lag or make mistakes. We only publish figures we can confirm, and DTMO's calculator is the source to trust.

Frequently asked questions

What is BAH for Huntsville, AL in 2026?

It depends on your pay grade and whether you have dependents. Look up your exact 2026 rate in DTMO's official BAH calculator using your Redstone Arsenal duty-station ZIP code. DoD says 2026 rates rose an average of 4.2% nationwide, effective January 1, 2026.[1,5]

Do I get more BAH if I live in Madison or Athens instead of Huntsville?

No. BAH follows your permanent duty-station ZIP code, not where you choose to live.[3]

Does the number of children change BAH?

No. BAH has only a with-dependents rate and a without-dependents rate.[4]

Will my BAH go down if Huntsville's rate drops next year?

Not while your status stays the same. Individual rate protection keeps the higher of the new rate or your December 31 rate, unless you PCS, are reduced in grade, or change dependency status.[4]

How is GI Bill housing allowance figured for Huntsville schools?

For in-person classes, VA uses the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at the ZIP code where you take most of your classes, then prorates by your eligibility tier and rate of pursuit.[7]
